“Fortune falls heavily on those for whom she’s unexpected. The one always on the lookout easily endures.”

SENECA, ON CONSOLATION TO HELVIA, 5.3

Daily Reflection

The Zen master’s lesson—"The glass is already broken"—echoes Stoic wisdom. If we accept that everything we own, every circumstance we cherish, and even the people we love are impermanent, we won’t be devastated when the inevitable happens. Instead, we’ll nod and say, “Of course.” In tech, this mindset is invaluable. Bugs will appear, systems will crash, and well-laid plans will sometimes fail. These are not extraordinary events they’re part of the process. If you expect that things might go wrong, you’ll be less shocked and more prepared to act. Today, practice this mental shift. View your possessions, projects, and even successes as temporary. Enjoy them, use them well, but remember: everything is in flux. By accepting this truth, you’ll find resilience when things inevitably change or break. Fortune can’t knock you down if you’ve already embraced the possibility.
